Is it safe to wax while pregnant

One question we are often asked at Beautique Newquay, is if you can still wax whilst pregnant. The short answer is yes! You absolutely can still wax whilst pregnant, however you may experience more discomfort during your treatments than usual.
Your skin is often more sensitive than usual when pregnant, due to all the hormonal changes you are experiencing. This also can affect your hair growth, with a lot of clients having their hair grow quicker than usual, and in areas they have never had hair before!
Whilst pregnant we always advise our clients to book their appointments 1 – 2 weeks earlier than they usually would. Not only is your skin more sensitive but often you will find your hair grows quicker than usual. By booking your appointments earlier there will be less hair to remove which will help with the discomfort you may experience during the treatment.
If you have never booked in for a wax before, that’s ok! You can still book in for one, but we recommend starting with a bikini wax and working up to the Brazilian. Due to the extra blood flow to the area we recommend you start slow, and build up to the Brazilian to minimise the pain.
You will also find that after care is even more important whilst being pregnant.
A waxing appointment will not harm your baby, but if you feel particularly uneasy or unsure of whether waxing whilst pregnant is right for you we recommend you speak with your health care professional, after all they will know what is best for you and your baby.
If you have any further queries or are interested in booking in for a wax during your pregnancy you can call us on 01637851500 or Book online

Winter brides... this one is for you!

There are lots of advantages to being a winter bride, here are a few.

You’re much less likely to get hot, sweaty or flustered in your big dress, the makeup is more likely to last all day, therefore, less time reapplying makeup and worrying about how you look
Plus, the added magic of Cornwall in winter is the perfect backdrop to the most romantic day of your life!

Here are Beautique’s top tips for preparing your skin for your Cornwall wintertime wedding:

Eat and drink right
Make sure your diet is rich in antioxidants, probiotics and healthy fats to ensure your skin has all the nutrients it needs. This will help skin to stay radiant and supple in the run up to your big day. Even in winter, you should be drinking eight glasses of water to ward off dehydration from dry winter air. Dehydration can lead to your skin looking dull no matter how much work you put into looking after it. Your water intake can include herbal teas or an occasional mug of green tea too, for an added antioxidant boost.

Sleep well!
A good night’s sleep may seem impossible in the run up to your wedding, but try to make it a priority. Your skin renews as you sleep which means that if you’re sleep deprived your skin will start to suffer; think dullness, dark circles and blemishes.

Hydrate and exfoliate
In winter the two most important things you can do for your skin are to keep it hydrated and to keep it exfoliated. This will prevent dullness, dryness and flakiness, and ensure you wake up on the day with a picture-perfect complexion. Using a hydrating serum and moisturiser twice a day will help keep your skin soft and supple, whilst exfoliating regularly will keep it smooth and radiant. The best way to exfoliate your skin is through Microdermabrasion, a facial treatment that stimulates the circulation whilst gently eliminating all traces of dead skin, to leave you with a beautifully radiant, rejuvenated complexion. It’s suitable for all skin types, and you never need to worry about redness or irritation as you might with other forms of exfoliation.

Get a routine.

We really recommend starting a good skincare routine, not only will this benefit you for your Wedsing but also for years to come! Dermalogica has a wide range of products which are customised to your individual skin concerns. At Beautique in Newquay we offer complimentary face mapping to assess your skin.

Is stress affecting your skin?

Juggling a stressful lifestyle can have a major effect on your health.

Some may suffer with a lack of sleep, poor diet or swollen glands; all aspects that can have a detrimental effect on your skin.

Whether you are feeling overwhelmed by continuous stress or stressful periods like wedding planning, a new job or moving house, here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to looking after your skin.

Tired eyes
As the result of not getting enough sleep, you could end up with puffy, tired eyes and dark circles. A hydrating, soothing eye cream like Dermalogica total eye Care will help with tiredness, while a colour correcting concealer is a god-send for fixing dark circles. Drinking lots of water will also help to brighten your eyes.

Dry skin
If you’re prone to dry skin, stress can make it much worse. The best way to alleviate dry skin is to moisturise. Extra nourishing face masks are also a welcome treat for skin craving hydration. Try the skin hydrating masque or Multivitamin masque by Dermalogica for extra skin hydration.

Breakouts regularly occur during stressful episodes. If spots tend to appear on your jawline or chin, this is due to hormones. When your body feels stressed, a hormone called cortisol is produced which leaves it more likely to suffer from blemishes

How to deal with the effects of stress
It’s best to try and deal with stress directly to eliminate the effects it has on the skin. In the meantime, yoga and meditation are just two things you can try which will help you to relax and relieve the symptoms.

Alternatively, any form of exercise is great as your body will release endorphins, your body’s natural pain and stress fighters.

For your skin, ensure you are using effective skincare products that are tailored to your skin type. At Beautique in Newquay, Cornwall we offer complimentary skin mapping.

This will aid clean skin and alleviate any impurities. Microdermabrasion is fantastic for getting a really deep clean and removing dead skin cells and debris.

Is it better to wax consistently?

After your waxing treatment at Beautique Newquay, your therapist is almost certain to recommend that you keep your waxing routine regular and ensure you rebook within 4 – 6 weeks, depending on your hair growth.

So what actually happens when you go too long between waxing appointments and does it really matter?

Hair Growth

Extending your waxing schedule alters your hair growth cycle. When you first begin waxing all of your hair will grow in different cycles. Some will be fully grown whilst others will only just be coming through. When you wax regularly all your hair ends up being part of the same cycle, which means that when your hair is removed, it’s all removed.

Leaving your appointment too long will see you lose your hair growth cycle which leads to uneven hair growth. This means shorter appointment cycles, and in some cases hair being left, as the hair is too short to be gripped by the wax.

If you leave an appointment longer than usual, you will find it is harder to exfoliate the skin properly, as your hair will be in the way. Exfoliation is a critical part of the waxing process as it removes all your dead skin cells. If these skin cells aren’t removed before your appointment the wax will grip your dead skin cells instead of the hair making the treatment more painful for you, and less effective at grabbing your hairs.

Another issue with leaving your appointment longer than you should is that the hair will begin to strengthen again. When waxing regularly, you weaken the hair follicle making the hair thinner and less painful to remove. As the hair follicle begins to strengthen the hair becomes thicker, resulting in a more painful wax, and no one wants that!

If you are looking to keep your waxes as painless as possible then we recommend keeping your appointments consistent. Everyone’s hair grows at a different speed but for most of us, booking in 4 – 6 weeks after your appointment should be your routine to get the best result.

If you are due for your next waxing appointment you can call Beautique Newquay 01637 851500 or Book online using our booking app Vagaro.

We are often asked ‘How often should I have a microdermabrasion treatment’ and it all depends on what results you are trying to achieve. We explain more below.

One-off Facial
One Microdermabrasion treatment on its own will exfoliate and remove dead skin cells to reveal a clean, bright complexion. It will unblock pores and help to remove blemishes, blackheads and dry skin. You’ll definitely see the difference and you’ll probably want more!
Microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment which means you will see improvements with each treatment you have. If you decide you love the treatment (we’re sure you will) then there are a few options to consider:

Course of Facials
We most definitely recommend that you plump for a course of facials. If your skin is in pretty good condition already a mini-course of 3 might be enough for you to get rid of all your blackheads and improve the texture and tone of your skin. If your skin needs a bit of work and you have skin concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, or mild outbreaks of spots then a course of 6 might be better. Ideally, treatments should be carried out every 7-10 days. This will allow your therapist to work deeper on the skin with each treatment; but safely and effectively without injury to the skin.

Treating Skin Issues
If you are suffering from acne or have acne scarring you might need even more than a course of 6 to see great results. Remember, microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment so if you are continuing to see improvements, persevere! Acne and acne scarring may require much more than 6 treatments for the best results.

Monthly Maintenance
After a course of treatment, you will need to maintain the results and keep your skin in tip-top condition. Skin renews itself about every 4 weeks so we recommend a monthly maintenance treatment to ensure the old skin is exfoliated to maintain a glowing complexion. Microdermabrasion also helps the absorption of skincare products into the skin, so your at home skin care routine is more effective.

Swapping over from shaving to waxing

Welcome to the world of waxing! Swapping over from shaving to waxing can be a daunting time and requires some serious will power to not shave, but with our help it will be a smooth transition (pun intended)!

1.Don’t shave! (or clipper)

If you’ve been shaving for a while, then you’ll be all too familiar with the stubble that appears after a few days. For a regular shaver, it’s only natural to pick up the razor, but if you are planning on transitioning you will need about half a centimetre to a centimetre of hair (about 2 weeks growth) for the wax to stick to.

If you leave your hair longer than the 2 weeks to grow out and feel that it’s a bit too long, don’t stress. Leave the hair and we will trim the hair back if necessary - we can work with longer hair, we can’t if it’s too short.

We’ll be honest, waxing isn’t without its pain. But on a scale of 1 to WTF it only sits at about a 5. We recommend you exfoliate your skin the night before your wax to remove all the dead skin cells on the area, meaning that the wax will stick to your hairs and not your skin. Much less painful!

3.Get into a routine

This may surprise you but waxing does actually get easier! If this is your first wax, or first wax in a while it is likely to sting a little more due to the volume of hair needing to be removed. Hair grows in different cycles and the longer you leave it, the more hair there is. Our pro tip? Make sure to book in for another wax 4 weeks after your first one. Less hair, less pain!

So, what are you waiting for? Drop the razor and book online now at Beautique Newquay!

New year New you

Your Skincare Beauty Resolutions!

A new year always brings the promise of new adventures, ideas and resolutions. Up your skincare game this year by setting yourself some beauty resolutions. It’s time to enrich your complexion with the very best skincare methods and products. Take some inspiration from our beauty resolutions list.

Establish a skincare routine
After the festivities of the party season, there has never been a better time to take care of your skin. The best method for restoring your complexion is by establishing an effective skincare routine. Start a routine by using a cleanser.

Cleansing is essential as it eliminates traces of makeup, dirt, grime and bacteria – elements that contribute to the formation of spots.

Follow up with a toner. Toning helps to remove any remaining cleanser as well as prepping your skin for remaining products.
The next step is serum – a serum penetrates deeper into the skin than other products so it’s important to choose a serum tailored to your skin type.
Finally, finish your routine with a moisturiser. All skin types require moisture, even very oily skin. Use a thick moisturiser for dry skin types to nourish your complexion and a light moisturiser on oily skin.

Don’t forget your eyes
The skin under your eyes is very thin so it needs careful treatment. Don’t forget to use a nourishing eye cream to help target fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles. Drink plenty of water to stop skin becoming dehydrated.

Exfoliation is crucial for removing dead skin cells that contribute to dull skin. A course of microdermabrasion treatments is gentle enough for even sensitive skin types to use and it’s the perfect way to achieve luminous skin with minimal effort on your part. Microdermabrasion will exfoliate much deeper and more effectively than other exfoliating methods and a monthly maintenance treatment will help you to maintain the excellent results. Be warned, it’s addictive!

How to Achieve Flawless Skin Without Using Foundation

Makeup is undoubtedly a secret weapon for sporting beautiful skin. Whether you’re struggling with spots, redness or dark spots, foundation can hide a multitude of complexion problems.

But, what if you don’t enjoy wearing foundation or you want to have a no makeup day? How can you achieve flawless skin without using foundation?

Check out our favourite tips.

Drink more water 💦
Water is incredible for promoting a clear complexion. As well as helping to flush out toxins from your body, water also keeps you hydrated, ensuring your skin is soft, smooth and nourished.

Eat your greens 🥗
A healthy, balanced diet is the best way to get nutrients. Dark, leafy greens as well as sweet potatoes, berries, nuts and oily fish will help to make your complexion luminous. If you’re a vegan, vegetarian or don’t like eating certain foods, try adding a supplement to your daily diet.

Exfoliate 🍁
The most effective way to add radiance to your skin is by removing dead skin cells. This can be achieved via exfoliation. Eliminating dead skin cells helps to smooth your complexion, brighten and promote an even skin tone. Try using a chemical exfoliator like the Dermalogica gentle cream exfoliant or try a treatment like microdermabrasion which gently removes dead and dry skin by suction.

Moisturise 💧
Moisturising your skin is essential for any type of complexion. Even oily and blemished skin types require constant moisture to prevent dehydration. Use a moisturiser aimed at targeting your problem areas, so if you have mature skin, try a firming moisturiser with retinol to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

Avoid the sun ☀️
Sun damage is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. If you’re going out in the sun, apply a high SPF and wear a sun hat to protect your face and scalp from sunburn.
